Cat Bi International Airport has begun trial operation using facial recognition cameras to check-in for domestic airline passengers using electronic citizen identification cards..
Cat Bi International Airport has begun trial operations using facial recognition cameras for airline check-in procedures since early February.
Regarding the pilot implementation of facial recognition technology when flying, Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has been implementing many modern scientific applications in the passenger service chain, including testing the passenger authentication system using electronic citizen identification cards in the aviation security check process for airline passengers at Cat Bi airport (Hai Phong).
According to ACV leaders, Cat Bi International Airport (under ACV) has coordinated with relevant units to install equipment and software to serve the testing of the passenger authentication system. Use electronic citizen identification cards at aviation security checkpoints for passengers on domestic flights.
Since the beginning of February 1, Cat Bi International Airport has begun trial operations using facial recognition cameras for airline check-in and piloted a separate lane for airline passengers. Domestic flights use electronic citizen identification cards.
Up to now, the number of tested passengers is 758 passengers, of which the number of identified citizen identification cards is 746 cards (98,4%), the rate of facial recognition cameras is 100%. The average time to read citizen identification cards and boarding passes is approximately 15 seconds/passenger, the average time to complete checking 1 passenger is 60 seconds.
“Test results show that the system has provided good support for aviation security forces in controlling passengers, however there are still some problems such as the speed of reading electronic citizen identification cards of the device is poor. slow; In some cases, citizen identification cards cannot be read due to faulty cards, blurred or dirty MRZ codes... In the next phase, Cat Bi airport will research and develop automatic checking equipment, without the need for control of aviation security staff to reduce human resources," ACV leaders added.
Expand piloting of facial recognition technology when flying
In addition, ACV has established a connection system between the airport and the citizen identification database of the Ministry of Public Security to control domestic air passengers to increase accuracy; Prevent and promptly detect cases of passengers using fake documents to travel by plane; Screening objects banned from flying or required visual inspection/visual inspection of checked baggage...
At aviation security checkpoints, install electronic citizen identification card readers and specialized cameras to compare passengers' faces with information available in citizen identification cards. Aviation security staff scan electronic citizen identification cards and boarding passes using specialized equipment, and match passengers' faces. The system authenticates citizen identification and returns results to authenticate passenger information, itinerary information, and compares with the no-fly list/mandatory visual check/visual check of checked baggage.
In case the system records the information on the citizen identification card and the face matching image, the itinerary information is correct, the aviation security staff allows the passenger to move into the screening area. In case one of the information does not match or the passenger's name matches the no-fly list or requires a visual check, the aviation security staff will carry out the security check process according to regulations.
In addition, VeriPAX software, self-developed by ACV, displays all information read from citizen identification cards, itinerary information, and is connected to the list of passengers who have completed airline procedures to check Compare boarding pass with passenger's flight route.
In particular, VeriPAX software also connects to the database of the Vietnam Aviation Administration's no-fly list to quickly identify whether passengers are on this "black list" or not.
In addition, VeriPAX has a warning feature for users in case passengers need to visually check checked baggage; Can control passengers using other types of identification documents, not using electronic citizen identification cards./.
